Controlled Guidance Through Repeated Mold Cycles
The mold guide pillar and bushing keeps the moving and fixed halves of a mold on a controlled path during opening, closing and clamping. Accurate guidance protects cavity edges, inserts, ejector systems and parting surfaces from side loading caused by positional drift. The set also helps the mold return to the same closing position through repeated production cycles.
Yijiang produces the guide components from GCr15 high-carbon chromium bearing steel. This grade responds well to heat treatment and provides the hardness needed for repeated sliding contact. The pillar carries the guiding surface, while the matching bushing distributes contact around its internal bore. Their fitted relationship influences mold movement, friction, clearance and long-term positioning accuracy.
Ground Surfaces and Matched Sliding Clearance
After rough machining and heat treatment, precision grinding controls the pillar diameter, bushing bore, cylindricity and surface finish. A smooth contact surface reduces drag and limits abrasive wear during frequent mold travel. Controlled clearance also leaves enough space for movement and lubrication without allowing excessive lateral play.
The required fit can vary with mold size, operating speed, load direction and working temperature. A clearance that is too tight may cause binding after thermal expansion or contamination. Excess clearance can permit movement between mold halves and place uneven pressure on cavities or inserts. Dimensions are checked against the selected fit before the parts enter assembly.
Chamfers at the entry end help the pillar engage the bushing without damaging the guide surface. Oil grooves, lubrication channels, flanges and mounting shoulders can be added when the mold structure calls for them. Surface hardening and final grinding support a stable contact zone rather than relying on untreated machined steel.
Technological Process
- Drawing & Process Design: Determine guide pillar and bushing specifications, tolerances and fitting methods based on customer requirements, and optimize processing technology.
- Material Cutting & Rough Machining: Cut GCr15 bearing steel bars to size and perform rough turning to remove most of the excess material.
- Heat Treatment: Conduct quenching and tempering to stabilize material hardness at HRC60-64, improving wear resistance and toughness.
- Precision Grinding: Precision grind the guide pillar shank on an external cylindrical grinder and the guide bushing inner hole on an internal cylindrical grinder to ensure dimensional accuracy, roundness and coaxiality.
- Surface Treatment (Optional): Conduct mirror polishing, chrome plating or nitriding treatment as required to improve surface finish, wear resistance and corrosion resistance.
- Inspection & Packaging: Fully inspect the guide pillar and bushing for dimensions, roundness, coaxiality, hardness and surface quality, then pair and package qualified products by specifications.
